David Ellis

Founder and CEO

Founder and CEO of Maikai, responsible for the growth and positioning of its programmes and initiatives, with more than 25 years across business, sport and social impact. Formerly CEO of Harlequins and a group director at Catalyst Housing Group, he serves on the boards of Commonwealth Games England and the European Women's Rugby Championship. His spare time is family-focused, usually found on a touchline somewhere watching his kids play sport, though he attempts to stay fit with sporadic adventure races.

Richard Cotton, Co-founder and Partner Lead at Maikai

Co-founder and Partner Lead

Co-founder of Maikai, with more than 25 years of experience in global marketing and brand strategy leadership, Richard leads client relationships and brand positioning. He has held leadership roles at Coca-Cola and global ad agency TBWA, and is an adviser at Bain & Company. A family man and lover of nature, he can be found tending his bees when he is not out cross-country running.

Chairman

Chairs Maikai, overseeing governance and finance, and is a sage adviser to the founders and the wider team. A chartered accountant, he spent six years as Chief Financial Officer of City Football Group, Manchester City's parent company, was CFO of twofour54 in Abu Dhabi and held senior finance roles across Viacom companies: more than 25 years in sport, media and entertainment. He also serves as a non-executive director of the Special Olympics and an independent director of Southampton FC. A fitness enthusiast and mad-keen cyclist, he has more than one Ironman to his name.

Charly Classen, Sports Impact Leader at Maikai

Charly Classen

Sports Impact Leader

Adviser to Maikai and a seasoned sports media executive who previously held senior roles at ESPN and Sky Deutschland, where as part of the management board he led sports, customer operations and the B2B business. Deeply committed to social impact, he serves as Vice Chair of Special Olympics Great Britain and believes business can — and should — be a force for good, aligning commercial success with meaningful societal change. Family, friends, sports, travelling and food make him happy outside work.

Daniel Gill, Education Board Adviser at Maikai

Education Board Adviser

Advises Maikai on education, drawing on 30 years creating opportunities for young people from widely different cultural, social and economic backgrounds to learn alongside one another. Formerly Director of Sport at Westminster School and The Dragon School, he became the education sector's first Director of Social Impact, bringing social enterprise and philanthropy into school life, and has led projects in India, South Africa, Brazil and Oxford. An elected Ashoka Change Leader, he is a trustee of Alive and Kicking UK and Isiqalo UK (Waves for Change), and has advised the Dalai Lama Centre for Compassion.

Helps guide Maikai's thinking, delivery and programme effectiveness, drawing on a 20-year consulting career transforming and scaling businesses. He co-founded and exited Gate One, a 300+ person global transformation consultancy. Now part of the founding team of WhatWeAllAgreeOn, a non-profit community which supports founders of social and environmental ventures to scale their impact. Supports a wider range of start-ups close to his heart, as an angel investor and NED. Whenever he can get away with it, you'll find him snowboarding, scuba diving or attempting any water sport.

Brings more than 20 years in executive search to Maikai. A Senior Client Partner at a global search firm, she leads its digital practice across EMEA and has worked in digital since 1996, with assignments spanning non-executive, CEO and C-level roles for pureplay digital businesses and digital transformation across sectors from media and entertainment to financial services and utilities. She also advises a number of early-stage ventures. Away from work she is a seasoned and intrepid traveller.

Helps lead Maikai's growth across sport and enterprise partners, focusing on how AI and data can create more opportunity. Holds a degree in International Relations and Politics from Durham University and is based in Washington DC. Most weekends you can find him playing or watching football, though any sport will do.

Leads Maikai's work in the education sector, helping schools upskill staff and connect more young people, including those not in education, employment or training, with the skills they need to thrive. Holds a Master's in Marine Biology from the University of Southampton. Loves playing football every weekend, rain or shine.

Leads Maikai's growth across sport, small businesses and enterprise partners. Holds a degree in International Relations from King's College London and founded an annual event series that uses sport to fundraise for refugees in the UK and internationally. Most weekends you can find him cooking for a mix of family, friends and new faces.

Leads the finance function at Maikai, splitting his time as a fractional CFO with European Golf Design. Formerly led the EMEA corporate finance team at American Express. A keen golfer, he is passing on his love of the sport to his four sons.

Impact and Sustainability Adviser

Brings 20 years in sustainability and impact to Maikai. Originally a strategy consultant, he founded and exited a sustainable palm oil business in West Africa, and now works as a professional non-executive director and angel investor with board roles spanning regenerative agriculture, digital education for people with learning disabilities and alternative education. Away from the boardroom he loves surfing, snowboarding and every kind of ball sport.

Guides Maikai's work in Sport for Good and social mobility. CEO of the England Touch Association and a board member of the Positive Youth Foundation, he has spent his career leading organisations that use sport to change lives. Away from work you'll find him on a badminton court as the reigning world, European and British champion at the World Transplant Games.
